SERVICE 01

3D nipple tattooing

LIGHT · SHADOW · LAYERED PIGMENT

On flat skin, a nipple can be suggested with light and shadow alone. We use realistic shading, soft highlights and carefully matched tones to create a natural-looking nipple and areola after breast surgery or reconstruction, starting with a personalised consultation at our Forest Hill studio.

A gloved hand prepares a small container of red pigment beside tattoo equipment, ink caps, cartridges, disposable gloves and other supplies.

Can it look realistic without a reconstructed nipple?

SHADING · HIGHLIGHT · DEPTH ON FLAT SKIN

This is one of the most common questions clients bring to a consultation, and it deserves an honest answer. 3D nipple tattooing is a visual effect. It does not create physical projection, and it is not surgical nipple reconstruction. What it can do is use darker shading where a shadow would naturally fall and lighter tones where light would catch, so the eye reads depth on skin that is flat.

For many clients, this gives a natural-looking result from a normal viewing distance. How convincing it looks for you depends on your skin condition, surgical history, any scarring and how your skin heals. Previously operated skin can take pigment differently from untreated skin, which is why we assess each client individually before recommending treatment.

Light and shadow, placed with care, let flat skin read as depth.

How depth is suggested on flat skin

SHADOW · HIGHLIGHT · EDGE · DISTANCE

3D nipple tattooing depends on a few decisions that are specific to this service. Each one is planned around your skin and your other side, so the result reads as one consistent form.

For the general sequence from first message to healed review, see your consultation and treatment process.

Where the shadow falls

Deeper tones go on the side of the nipple facing away from the light and in a soft crescent beneath it, the way a shadow falls on a raised form. It stays a visual effect. Nothing is physically raised.

Where the highlight sits

A small, lighter area on the opposite side suggests where light would catch. We plan it together with the shadow, so both follow the same direction of light.

The areola's edge and texture

Natural areolas rarely end in a hard line. We soften the outer edge and use fine variations in tone to suggest texture, instead of filling the area with one flat colour.

Judged from a normal viewing distance

The effect is designed to read at the distance you usually see yourself from, such as in a mirror. Up close, it is pigment on flat skin. Once your skin has healed, we look at the result with you, because colour and retention vary with individual healing.

It begins with a personalised consultation

YOUR SKIN · YOUR HISTORY · YOUR PREFERENCES

Before any treatment is recommended, we take time to understand what you would like, look at your skin condition and talk through your surgical history. We explain how 3D nipple tattooing works, what it can realistically achieve for you, and what the process involves.

If you have had a mastectomy, reconstruction or other breast surgery, medical clearance from your treating healthcare professional may be needed before treatment. Tattooing is a cosmetic and restorative procedure and is not a substitute for medical advice or surgical care.

See your consultation and treatment process for each step in more detail.

What shapes your result

SUITABILITY VARIES FROM CLIENT TO CLIENT

Results are individual. We cannot promise identical outcomes, permanent colour or a painless experience, but we can explain clearly what is likely for your skin. Full details are on Suitability, Limitations and Risks.

Skin and scarring

Your surgical history, any scarring and your skin’s condition and natural pigmentation all affect how pigment settles. They also affect how fine shading looks once healed.

Healing and colour

Every client heals differently. Colour can soften over time, and some clients may benefit from additional sessions to refine tone or shading.
